10 free open-source alternatives to ElevenLabs for voice-overs on your own computer
From my post on Nov 5, 2026. Here's the full list with links.
Voicebox
Start here: a free MIT-licensed desktop voice studio for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs 8 local engines (including Chatterbox, Kokoro and Qwen3-TTS), clones a voice from a few seconds of audio in 23 languages, splits long scripts into chunks for you, has a multi-track editor and a REST/MCP API, and needs no Python.
FreeChatterbox Multilingual (Resemble AI)
The closest match to ElevenLabs cloning here: a 0.5B MIT model that clones a voice from a short clip in 23 languages, with a control for how much emotion it puts in, on about 4–6 GB of VRAM. Two catches: every file gets an inaudible watermark, and the repo has been archived with no maintenance since August 2026.
FreeChatterbox-Turbo
A lighter 350M English-only Chatterbox model (MIT) with zero-shot cloning and tags like [laugh] or [chuckle] you write straight into the script. It's a good fit for shorts and faceless-channel narration on modest hardware.
